But before getting into the 25 safest countries in the world, let us briefly explain the three indexes we used and the weights we assigned to each.
Global Peace Index (GPI): This index measures the relative peacefulness of countries based on a variety of indicators, including the level of violent crime, political stability, and military expenditure. Countries with high GPI rankings, such as Iceland, New Zealand, and Denmark, tend to have stable governments, low levels of corruption, and effective law enforcement. These factors contribute to a sense of security and order, reducing the likelihood of violent crime and conflict. We assigned a weight of 40% to this index.
Crime Rate Index (CRI): The Crime Rate Index, on the other hand, offers a more specific measure of crime levels within a country. Low crime rates are often the result of effective policing, a well-functioning judiciary, and social programs that address the root causes of criminal behavior. For instance, Singapore's low crime rate is a testament to its strict law enforcement, comprehensive surveillance network, and emphasis on social harmony. In Japan, a culture of respect for authority, along with community-based policing, contributes to low crime rates and a strong sense of public safety. We assigned a weight of 30% to this index.
Safety Perception Index (SPI): This index provides a comprehensive assessment of worries and experiences of risk measures across five key risk domains: food and water, violent crime, severe weather, mental health and workplace safety. For example, Uzbekistan is recognized as the country with the lowest risk impact, primarily due to its low levels of reported experience of harm. In three key areas - violent crime, extreme weather events, and mental health problems - Uzbekistan has among the lowest experience rates in the world– but does not have the lowest worry rates in any domain. While perception can be subjective, it can still impact how safe people feel in a country. We assigned a weight of 30% to this index.
