The Mae Hong Son Loop is a renowned 600-kilometer circuit in Northern Thailand, starting and ending in Chiang Mai. This journey takes travelers through the picturesque provinces of Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai, offering a rich tapestry of landscapes, cultural experiences, and historical sites.

Route Overview:

The loop can be traversed in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction, each presenting unique experiences:

  •  Clockwise Route: Depart from Chiang Mai heading southwest towards Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s highest peak. Continue to Mae Sariang, then proceed north to Mae Hong Son, and finally head east to Pai before returning to Chiang Mai. 
  •  Counterclockwise Route: Begin by traveling north from Chiang Mai to Pai, then west to Mae Hong Son, followed by a southward journey to Mae Sariang, and conclude by heading northeast back to Chiang Mai. 

Key Destinations and Highlights:

  1.  Chiang Mai to Doi Inthanon:
  •  Explore Doi Inthanon National Park, home to Thailand’s highest mountain, cascading waterfalls, and the revered King and Queen Pagodas. 
  2.  Doi Inthanon to Mae Sariang:
  •  Travel through serene landscapes dotted with traditional villages, offering insights into local life. 
  3.  Mae Sariang to Mae Hong Son:
  •  Navigate winding mountain roads leading to Mae Hong Son, a town influenced by Burmese culture, evident in its temples and architecture. 
  4.  Mae Hong Son to Pai:
  •  Visit attractions like the Su Tong Pae Bamboo Bridge and Tham Lot Cave. Pai is known for its vibrant arts scene, hot springs, and Pai Canyon. 
  5.  Pai to Chiang Mai:
  •  Conclude the loop with a scenic drive back to Chiang Mai, passing through lush forests and mountainous terrains.
