I'm looking for travel mates for coming winter... possibly end of sept. to febr.
(The match of a small group will tell when will be the time to go for it =-P ! )
My main target Will be hunting northern lights. If you're also fascinated about this and really want to experience please reply on this message and let's chat,
NOTE: Don't think you only will have some 'hopeful' chance once a week by some aurora-KP-alerts on your phone. With some experts
I found out that with more responsible behaviour in your itinerary you can find the lights almost every night!
I've traveled the South coast to South east and also Golden circle for 5 days with my travelling partner and some other people joining us in a 4x4-wheel drive car. I cant drive, but I paid half Of the car rent and petrol ..adding my part of responsibility for our rejoicing shared journey. For the journey in winter 2019/2020 i like to do the same. Lets share all of the journey.
(NOTE... We learned a few things! Some very very important things and other more optional ones..according to preferations.
1. The most important things to watch out for is about planning the itinerary. :
* When you want to ensure your chance to see the northern lights.. well, i can tell you: a Pre-planned itinerary can cause a dramatic failure! And that's what we experienced!
After a full day of driving to our sightseeing targets, we 2 ended up in our target Of the night quite late.. the driver exhausted and dying for some sleep, because.. Icelandscapes can be intense for some people who are used to very different driving conditions.
After one hour the Aurora alert showed a huge rising value and exceptional strong northern light shows appeared above the area where we just came from...and NOT in the area were we ended up according to the booked nightstays.
Being too tired, she couldnt continue driving in the night for one hour more to reach the right skies!
** If you want to see as much as possible in one day, you probably Will plan and drive as much as can be reached.. but.. in winter some unexpected weather appearances along the way can slowen down your driving speed. And so.. you're constantly nervous about reaching your final stay for the night..so no time for nice hikes through nature and sites. Only driving and keeping an eye on the scedule of the day to reach other places.
So, This time the itinerary doesn't Matter too much to me.
Lets just experience the nature beauty in day time (i mean, we all want to experience the same in this country ! Waterfalls, rivers, thermalsprigs/rivers, hikes & canyons, glacier sites etc etc.. annnnd ...let's pay attention to the forecast for clouds and skies and important measure-values for aurora and save the energy to go-go-go-drrriiive to the right place in the evening.
Then this:
Maybe we can choose for a camper-van for 3 to 5 persons. The prices of renting are chocking in the first place BUT..
* Imagine.. travelling with a group of let's say 3 people...If you want to book stays for the night last moment (sometimes we need to do because of the aurora-forecast) you pay at least 40,- to 70,- US DOLLAR PER PERSON per night for a 6 bed-mixed-sleeping-room IF you are lucky ! Soo.. sleeping in the camping-van with 3 beds....free to go where-ever ... is not more expensive!!
**
Most of the car rental offices offer 50% off in wintertime !!
