Who can apply?
Non-EU nationals working remotely for non-Spanish companies are eligible for Spain's digital nomad visa. Whether you're a self-employed freelancer with multiple clients or employed by a single company outside of Spain, this visa is for you! Just make sure that no more than 20% of your income comes from Spanish firms.
Requirements to apply
To qualify for the digital nomad visa, applicants must:
Be from outside the European Economic Area
Not be living illegally in Spain
Not have lived in Spain within the five years prior to applying
Prove a working relationship with clients or a company for over three months before applying
Show that their job can be done remotely
Additionally, applicants need at least three years of work experience in their field or relevant qualifications, like a university degree or professional certificate.
Income and insurance requirements
Applicants must prove that they earn at least €2,334 per month or €28,000 per year to be considered self-sufficient. They also need valid health insurance and a clean criminal record in Spain and their country of residence for the past five years.
Visa duration and residency card
The digital nomad visa is initially valid for 12 months or the employment period if shorter. It can be renewed for up to five years, but you must not be absent from Spain for more than six months per year. Visa holders can also apply for a residency card, allowing them to travel throughout the EU.
Family members
Close relatives, like children and spouses, can join the visa holder in Spain with proof of sufficient funds (€875/month for a two-person family unit and €292/month for each additional family member).
Application process
Apply through a Spanish consulate or embassy in your home country or enter Spain on a tourist visa and apply within the first three months. Required documentation includes the application form, proof of payment for the admin fee, a copy of your passport, proof of qualifications or work experience, proof of employment and income, proof the company has existed for more than a year, a letter of authorisation from your company to work in Spain, proof of a clear criminal record, and proof of health insurance.
Tax breaks
Digital nomads staying in Spain for over 183 days are considered tax residents but can enjoy a reduced tax rate of 15% during their first four years, provided they earn below €600,000 a year.
