Inspiration For The Singapore Trip

The trip to Singapore was a part of my honeymoon where I and my husband traveled through Asia for three months. The decision to add Singapore to the itinerary came from me seeing photos of some stunning colorful buildings and murals on Instagram, as well as the futuristic Gardens By the Bay and ArtScience Museum.

I just felt like Singapore seemed to be a mix between traditional buildings and modern architecture and it was something I wanted to experience in person.

Itinerary

Day 1: Haw Par Villa, Telok Blangah Hill Park, Chinatown

Day 2: Fort canning park, Little India, Old Hill Police Station, Chijmes Church, Clarke Quay

Day 3: Gardens by the Bay, Cloud Forest, Flower Dome, Koon Seng Road

Day 4: ArtScience Museum, Arab Street/Quarter + Haji Lane (loads of street art!), Chinese Gardens, Singapore Botanical Garden

Day 5: Orchard road + library, Sentosa island

What I Packed

Lots of t-shirts and light dresses since it got very hot during the day. I found that shopping in Singapore was quite expensive, comparing to Stockholm which is generally also considered pricey. So, I was glad I had already brought enough appropriate clothes.

How I Planned For The Trip

Our case was a bit special since we had pre-planned our three-month trip before we went. So, we booked our hotels and flights around three months before we arrived in Singapore. As for local transport, you don’t have to prebook anything.

However, if you plan on visiting attractions such as the ArtScience Museum, Flower Dome, Skywalk, or Cloud Forest you might want to pre-book the tickets a couple of days at least before you plan ongoing.

Food Items To Try In Singapore

I’m not the biggest foodie myself so food for me was more of a necessity than anything. But I highly recommend visiting a Hawker Center to eat. It's basically a huge food court where you can find local delicacies at affordable prices!

I did meet up with a friend I had gotten to know through Instagram, who lives and works in Singapore since a few years back. She showed us a nice restaurant in the Arabic District. During the day the restaurants are closed, and the streets are filled with tourists trying to capture the stunning street art, but as soon as the sun goes down the area comes to life with fluorescent lights and music.

Favourite Memory From The Trip

One of the things that I remember most vividly was seeing the light show at Gardens by the Bay.

They do two free shows every night, so get there 20 minutes early and have a lie down at the benches right under the trees. When we visited, they had an opera theme, and it was just so powerful. We went back to see it the day after as well because it was just so spectacular. Even now, over a year later, I still watch the videos I took, and it gives me chills!

How I Kept Costs Down

Singapore is generally an expensive city. The accommodation cost was the biggest expense for us, so make sure you check sites like Airbnb where you might be able to reduce that cost.

Singapore is easy to travel around in, both by bus and by metro so do not be afraid to stay somewhere that’s not in the middle of the city center. Food was a lot cheaper than I first thought but eating at Hawker centers rather than western fast-food chains is also a good way to save those pennies.

Sights Not To Be Missed Out On

Gardens By The Bay – both during the day and the night. There’s a lot more to see and do in that area than just the Supertree Grove, you also have Marina Bay Sands with its incredible architecture and fantastic view from the SkyPark, and the ArtScience Museum that usually has some cool futuristic exhibitions.

You also shouldn’t miss a visit to the different cultural districts within the city, it’s like traveling the world within one metro trip. You have Chinatown, Little India and the Arab Quarter to name a few. The architecture, vibe and food vary a lot between the different districts and it’s a cool experience!

Suggestions For First Timers Headed To Singapore

Make sure you dedicate at least 5 days to explore the city because there’s a lot to see and do.

Singapore is extremely hot and humid so you might not have the energy to do too much each day. And don’t forget to pack beach wear as there’s a beautiful beach in the city as well as many amazing other islands nearby to explore!
