I did there my farmwork 3 years ago..... And realised quickly... That I have to leave and escape!!!!

    • Google Review (3/5)

It's a working hostel. Drink alcohol isn't allowed. The rooms are good, you share with 5 people more and the cleaner pass once a week. Spacious kitchen, you have to check what time isn't busy.

    • Google Review (1/5)

Terrible terrible!! The hostel is not worth the money. You pay $205 for rent and transport and you even pay for the transport when you don’t work. The cabins are not insulated and you have to pay to heat the room with a pants heater that only works for 5 hours at a time. It feels like a summer camp with kitchen curfews at 9pm, no WiFi and if you get in the managers’ bad books, you will get kicked out.

We were told work on the weekend was optional, so when we didn’t get up one Sunday the manager came in shouting and scolding us as though we were children and not adults. We were also told we couldn’t use our own transport as the farm didn’t allow it and that was false.

My friend who had previously worked in the hostel came to pick us up and was sat in the kitchen as he has a broken ankle. He was asked to immediately leave and was even escorted out of the building. All personable communication and chat is fake. They have very little respect for the workers and you’re treated as just a means to money.

I’ve made lots of friends and that is the only positive thing that came out of staying with Backpackers Queensland.

    • Google Review (1/5)

If you enjoy paying 200 dollars a week for a bed in a 6 person dorm.. with no wifi... then look no further!!!!

Michelle is one of the rudest people I have ever met. And if you are lucky enough to do your farm work in Stanthorpe make sure you don’t end up in this dump!!!!!

Much better hostels for a cheaper price are easily available in Stanthorpe!!

Also they enjoy giving the guests “Fines” which is basically just blackmail.

The operation that they run here is nothing short of criminality

    • Google Review (1/5)

DO NOT GO TO THIS HOSTEL.

Rent is 205$ a week, you stay in a 6 bed dorms in which you have to pay to have 6hours aircon. You don’t have Wi-fi unless you pay for it. The kitchen closes at 9pm and there’s no quiet room.

I got to work at snowman’s farm to pick apples, on a piece rate, and I only made 400$ in a week working 9 hours a day under a queensland sun picking the smallest apples you could find.

The owners of the backpack seem lovely when you get here and when you pay your rent but other than that, they’re the most despicable you could find only here to rip you off. Be careful!

Really cool place to be when doing your farm work!

Big house to share and also a little cottage.

Places to chill & watch Netflix, good outside area that’s sheltered plus a huge garden for whatever you wanna do.. not to mention the huge communal kitchen/lounge/weekend party area.

Again a great place to make your farm work family.

I was here for around 6months to complete my 88days and then some more. Great hostel. Ben and Penny really care about their guests. Couldn't have done it without them.

Fantastic vibe at the hostel too, everyone is super friendly and welcoming, like a massive family (about 60-70 people when full). Can't think of a better place to do your days or even just for a couple of months to save some money. My home from home!

    • Google Review (5/5)

    It's such a lovely place!

I can highly recommend it to everyone who wants to complete their farm work while having lots of fun!

The owners are great, awesome people living here, big kitchen, rooms are nice, the rent is cheap and the jobs are good paid. I was here while Christmas time and it felt like home because of the atmosphere. They really want you to have a good time and that you are enjoying yourself.

-There was just an overall weird vibe in this place. Me and my friend didn’t feel particularly safe, especially as there was a door in our room that led to another room that was very very flimsily locked, anyone could have broken in! …

    • Booking.com Review (9.2/10)

+The staff are warm and welcoming, very friendly and very helpful.

    • Google Review (2/5)

So we planned to stay for two nights but left after the first. Bunk beds are super old and squeaky. You can feel the steel spring of the mattress and the window was headed to the entrance of the hostel where everybody smoked. Curfew was at 9:30 and we weren’t allowed to end our monopoly game in the “garden” and we were super quiet. This was ridiculous on a Friday. The common room looked like a messy student dorm and the bathrooms hadn’t any window so it was quite smelly and on top dirty. The two showers were full of razors, shampoo and other personal stuff from the people who stayed there. We didn’t like it at all!

At least the lady at the reception was very helpful and friendly.

    • Booking.com Review (9.2/10)

+Friendly and helpful staff, super clean with areas being cleaned a few times during the day, nice area outside to chill out and good location walking distance to the beach..

-Some of the bathroom facilities are out of order and could be fixed..

    • Booking.com Review (6.2/10)

+having the room to ourselves. outside dining area.

-having the communal loungeroom in the kitchen area was off putting and too noisy.

-They charge me twice for our stay and refused to refund my money.

That’s all the ventilation we had in a four bed room in the middle of the hot and humidity summer in QLD. They very strict about the rules but the guest service isn’t good at all. Rooms, toilets and common areas were so dirty. You can not be out your rooms after 9 pm! I have been travelling for the last 5 years around the world, and this is worse hostel ever, do not go!

A fine place to stay with a lot of facilities like laundry, kitchen, bar and restaurant. But the room had wood bars over the door, so you couldn't really have the light on without any mosquitos entering the room. The supermarket was also place 1,2 km away which was pretty annoying. Otherwise a lovely place to stay

Best hostel ever! Perfect location, very quiet and clean. 5 minutes away by walk from the beach and the Noosa NP and 15 minutes away from the supermarket.

    • Booking.com Review (9.2/10)

+It’s such a lovely location and it fits into Noosa Heads perfectly. It’s idyllic and romantic, and yet close to the Hastings street which is basically a few steps away as is the beach. The national park is around the corner and also all the healthy foods. Will definitely come back next year!.

    My stay in Paradise!

I stayed in Dolphins for 3 weeks, I can only say that the facilities are in very good condition and each one of the people who work there is friendlier than the previous one, always available to help you: Anna, Emma, Estelle, Andi, Curtis, Daniel...

The location is perfect, just in front of the wonderful Sunshine Beach, perfect place to surf or do one of the different routes! the atmosphere is incredible, we were like a big family and met incredible people who I can call friends.

At the hostel you can watch movies, do a workout, lie in a hammock and read a book, practice yoga, rent a surfboard or even play ping-pong!

If you are looking for a small home in paradise you should definitely stay here! I hope to return very soon.

Best hostel in QLD. Located 2 min walk from beautiful sunshine beach. Very friendly and kind staff who helped me every time. The place itself is very clean and backpackers-friendly with chill- beach kind of vibes. I highly recommend to go there and have the best time .

    • Booking.com Review (10/10)

+It was the best hostel I stayed in during my stay in aus . The owners and staff couldn't do enough for you and the location was great only a 2/3 minute walk to the beach ... Highly recommended ?.

    • Google Review (5/5)

    Great place to stay.

All the hostel including the commun areas, kitchens, bathroom and rooms where very clean.

Has a great location; close to the beach, national park, shops.

They offer great facilities like a shuttle bus to the main beach or main city, surf classes, etc.

But the best part is Curtis who makes people experience outstanding with his great energy floating around ! Thank you.

    • Google Review (5/5)

This hostel was very cozy. Designed in a way to mingle with all guests there. There was entertainment (Board games, table tennis, free boards). Their bathroom is a single one with a shower in it for two rooms, so more private than lockers which is great. They are very reasonable with their guests too. Enjoyed my stay there.

Beautiful place, everything well organized and clean. Loved the dogs and the surroundings.

Good place to be for doing your farm work!

    • Google Review (5/5)

Excellent place to do the farm work! I was working during one and a half month, I met wonderful people and enjoyed a lot the time there. It is a beautiful hostel equipments with everything, a comfortable kitchen, game room, cinema, a gym and a place for drink and listen music. Rhys and Vanessa are very nice people and always worried about the farm work. On Christmas they prepared a barbiecue for everyone and we spended the day in the beach with their family and Jeannie (a beautiful and funny woman). I definitely recommend this place for farm work!

    • Google Review (5/5)

We had heard horror stories about farm work in Australia, but completing our days the Eco-Lodge was a wonderful experience. Rhys and Vanessa have traveled themselves and aren't out to rip off backpackers - while in high season everyone at the hostel were working hourly wage jobs, and in the low season Rhys will warn you if he only has lower paid piece rate jobs available.

Not only that, the Lodge is a beautiful hostel in itself; it's been equipped with great additions like a cinema room, a games room, a gym etc, and while we were there Rhys was working hard on reinvesting money into building a new outside area with beer fridges!

The Eco-Lodge is a passion project, and is a great place to be. Extra shout to Jeannie too - if you are lucky enough to live here you will meet a true inspiration to all of us!!

This hostel is one of the better ones to complete your 88 days. The owner (Rhys) makes sure you get a decent job and the facilities around the hostel are great too. The easygoing vibe in combination with the surrounding nature makes it a peaceful place. Definitely worth to recommend this hostel!

Hi Charlotte, thanks for taking the time to review, we wish you all the best in the future. If you want a 3rd year, you know where to call. Cheers Eco Lodge family

Great place. The staff is very friendly and know to listen about your needs. However, you can not know if you will have a full time job during your stay. It does not depend of the staff but of the farms, their availability and the weather. Some people might be lucky, some not. But the staff tries to give you the best as they can. The infrastructures, as toilets, or the sport place are a bit old, don't be too demanding.

About me, I staid in farmgate for seven weeks and worked during five of them, that was not too bad. It is easy to save money, considering that you have no place to spend it in Childers, except the pub ? the rent is not too expensive, I advice you to sleep by your own, as in a van ($170/w)

Anyway, the place is very friendly, you can meet very nice people :)

    • Google Review (3/5)

I've been at Farmgate for 5 months, definitely not the place to make money, Most of the time I always worked piece rating, only being able to pay rent and food, while some people were always being helped with hourly paid jobs.

I never complained, always paid on time, always been nice and patience, but the best jobs have always been given to others and not to me :)

The staff works hard to always find you a new job, (I have to be honest).

The cabins and the resort in general are ok. Recommended if you are in a hurry to complete the 88 days, not recommended if you want to make money.  This is my personal experience. I was able to complete my 88 days, but I went away completely broke.

    P. S.

Luis has always been kind and has always tried to help me.

    • Google Review (5/5)

I stayed at farmgate for 3 months and I had a great time and I was able to save up a lot of money. I had my first job only 2 days after I arrived and had work throughout the whole time. The place itself is really nice with the pool, the quiet town nearly and fun people in the cabins around you. I definetly experienced that people had to wait for a jobs sometimes or that they got bad jobs (happens in every working hostel), but I personally never had any trouble with that throughout the whole season. For me it was the perfect place to do my farmwork.

    • Google Review (2/5)

I've been in this working hostel for about a month and a half. After 10 days of collecting mandarins with the pay that changed every day, I was moved to packaging where I was hourly paid but after a while I'm been fired for no reason and I lost half of my bond. A "private guard" of the campsite made it so that after 9.30 PM no one made any kind of noise and sometimes a curfew was applied to the common kitchen that was closed. The water from the showers in the upper part of the campsite was always cold, so 50% of the people who lived in the campsite could not take a hot shower after a day's work.

Dingo Base was my very first hostel experience, and I’m glad it was.

I was there for two months, and I couldn’t have had a better time.

I know from other people I met in Bundy, and two nights I spent at another hostel, that Dingo’s is by far the best in town.

Any mess or untidiness is down to the guests, not the hostel. It’s always being cleaned; Amanda does a phenomenal job.

The staff make you feel welcome and do their best to get you work. A lot of ‘getting work’ is weather dependant, so it’s not the hostels fault when you can’t work.

I met friends for life at Dingo Base, created memories and had the time of my life.

David, Wanda, Courtney, Sam, Storm, Beau, Taylor and everyone else that works at Dingo go above and beyond to help you out and make you feel like family.

There’s a great bar and swimming pool which is a huge bonus, and a nice way to relax after a long day on the farm!

It gets busy at a weekend and you can have a chilled night or a Raging Party.

I was genuinely gutted when I had to leave, so much so that I went back for two nights during some travelling of the East Coast.

The shopping centre is a 10 minute walk from the front door, there’s plenty of gyms nearby and the pub ‘The Spotted Dog’ which is literally round the corner do great food and has a good atmosphere.

There’s washing facilities in the back and a basic gym, which has enough to get a good workout in.

Apart from travelling, this was the best part of my Australian experience.

    • Google Review (5/5) (Dingo Base)

Cracking place, good price for drinks and the pool is free to use. Great atmosphere. I just wish they'd fix the racing games

    • Google Review (1/5) (Dingo One)

When you try call you NEVER get an answer , I emailed and called for weeks before arriving and never once got an answer back just a generated email. As I was under pressure to get farm work I paid two deposits of $100 to then be emailed afew days later ( as we were traveling up to DingoBlue) to say that they were full and no beds/work for us for afew weeks.

Honestly it’s not worth the stress

    • Google Review (1/5) (Dingo One)

We weren't happy at all. But up to you to make your own judgement. Key access was taken away even though rent was paid. What management makes you jump a fence to get into your room.

The staff here are so friendly! They treat everyone with respect and do their best to keep the hostel clean! There is always a farm for you to work at, personally I have managed to save alot of money here.

There is so much to do outside of the hostel too, it's in the middle of bundaberg centre so there are pubs, restaurants, a mall, a swimming pool, an entertainment centre, every other shop you need. There's always something to do, I've been here for over 6 months doing my farm work and haven't even thought about going anywhere else.

    Response from the owner

Hello Melako Laksa. Although we couldn't find your name on our record, we apologize for your bad experience of our hostel. Many other backpackers of our hostel work hard and also save money while having fun and enjoying their stay. It is unfortunate that you didn't have that experience from our hostel. We wish you the best luck for your adventure.

    • Google Review (1/5)

I have been living at many bad hostels around the world but this is honestly the worst hostel I've lived in. Everything is dirty, its no toilet paper or soap in the bathrooms. The bedrooms have no windows, the aircon just working 6 hours /day so the rooms are like saunas and smells really bad.

When it comes to the work part its honestly slavery, we earned 10 dollar/day because it was nothing to pick. And the salary was over 1 month late and I called the staff over 10 times before they paid my salary.

So as an conclusion, even if you are a broke backpacker like me, don't go there, prison would even be better!!

    • Google Review (2/5)

The place is not very clean and I think they can give definitely more fore the money they earn. But you can find there fast work. A big problem is that you can kicked out because of small mistakes like a can of beer in you bag. And you are fired from your job when you was one time to late. The comfort ist not enough for the price per week and much to high when you know that the hostel earn money with every hour you work there!

    • Google Review (1/5)

I’ve been travelling and living on hostels for the past 4 months, and this is the worst place I’ve been to.

Extremely dirty, disgusting claustrophobic rooms/prison cells (actually prison probably has higher standards). You don’t get a pillow or bedsheets. The rooms has no windows and no ventilation, the only source of fresh air was the aircon, that runs between 6pm-00.

And it doesn’t end there, I also did some farm work, the pay was ridiculously low and I waited a month over my payday to get my salary and deposit back. I called the unprofessional staff over 10 times during that period but they “couldn’t” help me and I just had to wait.

    As a summary:

Don’t go to this place, there’s plenty of other options, I’ve nothing positive to say about it.

The hostel is always willing to help out and be lenient towards your situation. Be respectful towards the staff and you will have no issues with them. They will always provide you with work, if there is work. Not the cleanest hostel, but by far the cleanest hostel in bundy. Really enjoyed my time here!!

    • Google Review (5/5)

Had the best time here in City Centre! Made a lot of good friends and had really nice jobs. A lot of options to socialize with friends (common area, outside area and park nearby) Michael and Thimo (managers) are very friendly, helpful and good to have a laugh with! I am leaving for a holiday but I will be back for sure, see you in April :)

    • Google Review (5/5)

Fun atmosphere, clean rooms, open space and a lovely outside area; City Centre saved me for my last two weeks and gave me a job after Federal kicked me off mine because I had almost finished my days. Very grateful and happy for the place to have been part of my Bundy experience.

Awesome food and the friendliest staff. Had breakfast there this morning. Definitely my favourite brekie in Bundy..

Me and my boyfriend done our 88 days here. It’s not the best place but is ok, the other backpackers are really friendly and you can make friends for sure.

Try to not go in the summer because there are to many bed bugs.

Also the manager, Michael, is really rude and he is not gonna help you if you need anything, he just don’t care, but there is another guy who works in the hostel as well, Thimo, he is really nice and he always going to try to help if he can.

If you go here order in bulk because once you're served that's it, shutters down and you have to wait well over an hour just for another drink unless u walk in the kitchen area and shout for someone to serve you, even then, expect to wait a lengthy time. Miserable attitude from some staff but I can't bring down the others who made it an ok place to hang out. I'd put it down to poor management from what I could see.

Stayed here in 1995. Worked in tomatoes farm. Can’t believe it’s still here. Lots of backpackers looking for work and working. The hostel was not clean and not so good. 5 stars is only for the memories and that it’s still there. I recommend people go to other place for work, not bundaberg.

I have been staying there for a month and I got a job right after I arrived. It was really nice for staying.

The receptionists are friendly and care about people there. You can say it's better than other two of working hostel (city center & tomato hostel )where I was staying.

Kitchen is alright a bit small and stressful if you are cooking with 50 people together.

The dorm room which i was staying was nice.

    • Google Review (1/5)

Beware of this hostel. The owner Christine is an absolute nightmare, she clearly has bipolar disorder. I was then put on a cucumber farm, which other than one of the bosses literally bullying me was great but then after 2 weeks was told I’d be cut town to 3 days a week because despite me being a very fast worker they had hired new locals and prioritised then over Backpackers (thats the exact words they used), literally had my name crossed off the list and replaced by the boss who’d bullied me. I had seen the owner of the hostel in the past kick people out and give them 20 minutes to leave, get mad at people for asking for more hours after only getting 19 a week and fire people from their farms because they told her a week in advance they wanted to leave before their 3 months. She’s literally kicked people out for being too loud after 10. Anyway she saw me packing up and I told her the situation and that I was leaving the night with friends and had just found out 20 minutes earlier that I was leaving and she proceeded to yell at me and tell me I had 30 minutes to get out, which I didn’t get my deposit or the rent I’d paid back. The people staying there hate her, the people working there hate her, I mean this place is hell on earth. They may say they have work but they won’t tell you that half the people get fired from the main farm they put people on within their first day which leave 12 people currently on standby list waiting for work, and that’s even after 10 people have left because they have no work. Don’t come to Bundy especially not this Backpackers, this was the worst month in all my travels. I know like the others people who have posted negative reviews Christine will try to discredit me, don’t listen to her, I actually stayed there during the month of January, locker 71 room 9. This place is hell.

    • Google Review (1/5)

Do not go here for work or stay over! The hostel is bed bug ridden, with very little being done about it. The kitchen is disgusting - frustrating that people can't clean up after themselves but there is no actual cleaner there to clean it either. There is no work, we were promised 13 weeks work, there never was 13 weeks work just 2 weeks but they kept insisting there would be more work in order to keep us there paying the $180 a week. Alot of the backpackers there had been there for well over 6 months getting their visa days that should've been done in 13 weeks because they were getting work 1 or 2 days a week and then in debt for paying for accommodation. We had two convicts who had just been released from prison staying there, one was a diagnosed schizophrenic who hid the knives in his room! The only thing I have to thank the Grand for is the 9 days towards my 88 days and the few cracking people I met there! If you're looking for visa days go direct to farm if you can and avoid working hostels.

    • Google Review (5/5)

We lived at the hostel for 3 months to do farm work. Melissa and Nicole are fantastic managers! The hostel is really social and we were encouraged to make the it feel like our home. A great location being close to amenities, bars and clubs. Bundaberg is a good place for consistent work, you may need to wait a little longer to get on an hourly paid job, but you get reduced rent when not working. Remember, it's the staff and other guests that make the experience!

    • Google Review (1/5)

This is the worst/dirtiest/ lying hostel I've ever been too. My girlfriend and I were told there is tons of work and we needed to get there as soon as possible. We paid for a week and all other fees they made us pay. No work all week. They told us there was no work and they wouldn't give us an money back. We met people that have been there waiting for work for multiple weeks with no money left. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!!!! They will screw you over.

No working hostel is up to the same standards as the ones you have on holiday. North bundy has the most communal layout compared to other hostels which includes everyone and makes it really easy to meet the other backpackers. Hourly jobs can be scarce but try and sort your own and they will provide transport to and fro no problem ?

There’s a ‘gym’, four kettles and an empty pool, it’s essentially the ritz.

P.S be nice to Steve or you’ll be dust

After searching here and there across adelaide, i finally came across this one and thought to give it a try. The place was worth every penny and we enjoyed our time here. Would love to recommend to anyone looking for reasonable and a calmer stay in the area

I really enjoyed my time here. The best thing about North Bundy Backpackers is the environment and people you get in touch with here. I was recommended by my friend and it was worth it. Firstly i was hesitant bec of some of the bad reviews i saw here but most of them does not look to be legitimate now after i realized the reality by myself being here. Highly recommended!

I was at this hostel for a year. Although the rent was high, But I had work every day so I could save money a lot. And last year it was too dirty, this year many cleaners so I am happy about that.

The people from different countries lived, I was able to exchange cultures and made awesome friends in this hostel. I am very sad to leave now

    • Google Review (5/5)

I'm glad I chose this hostel. Because I always got an hourly pay job, and I got a paycheck and a pay slip without delay. It was easy to get a second visa and the friends I met here were the best. I think the management has definitely improved over the year as well.

ALL jobs are hourly paid which is rare in other hostels here in town. I recommend this hostel because of the jobs, the good managment and the great location.

Had a really good time at the Bunk Inn. The staff always offered a helping hand, when you had to go anywhere, which was really nice. In general, the vibe was perfect, and you can't complain about rooms at all. There's room for your bags and the cleanliness was top dollar ?

    Definitely recommend it!

+The hostel was generally clean however the air circulation in the mixed 5-bed dorm I stayed in was pretty bad and there was a strong smell in the room. There was free on street as well as behind the hostel parking which was convenient..

Less than a week ago they had bed bugs and took absolutely zero responsibility for it. They handling the situation rather poorly and even brought our German friends' race into the matter. They chauffeured us around a bit though which was cool. Maybe out of guilt lol

Although I already left this place weeks ago, I think of it fondly when I compare it to other backpacker accommodations. I simply loved all of the places you could sit by yourself to read or relax and the host James was ever helpful and kind. The location, next to a big quiet beach, is a plus. If you're looking for a cosy experience that reminds you of home, look no further.

    • Google Review (5/5)

I stayed at this hostel for nearly 8 months. I was told when i came in that work was not easy to find at the moment as the area had just been through a cyclone. I was told that i would need to wait but i would get work eventually. I was also given a good tip - if you want work you need to be able to get up in the morning and be sober and drug free. I took this comment lightheartedly at first but it paid off for me as i was ready for whatever work came my way. I got work within the first week (casual only at first) and eventually found great work on other farms. I kept my job when other backpackers lost theirs because they came to work with hangovers or bad attitude. I had no issues with Manager John as i wasn't keeping other backpackers or the nearby house awake at night. The hostel was always cleaned daily.

Some backpackers got kicked out of this hostel and it wouldn't matter where they stayed they would be kicked out as they had no respect for the work they were given of the hostel .

I left Bowen and managed to save nearly $15K, most money i've saved.

I'll come back when i do my second visa. Regards Jack

You need to stop at this place to meet one of the most interesting people of the universe and also visit this luxurious hostel. All is done to make you feel well and comfortable, starting from all the second-hand sofas. John is the most smiling person ever and he will get you a job in no time as you will be able to witness how he calls farmers constantly. Indeed the waiting list is just a quick formality, especially if you are a girl there, it is literally raining jobs! Be ready to be busy very quickly in this hostel. He does not drink alcohol so if you need to thank him a tomato juice will do instead! Also, he is vegan so no meat please he does not like bbq! He speaks several languages and articulate very well too for backpackers to understand everything quickly. A good thing is John's love for couples, if you kiss in front of him, this will fill his eyes with stars and heart with flowers. About the place itself, what a wonder, it is brand new hostel with loads of features such as dorms with doors and no doors, ping pong table with flat ball, no toilet smells in the rooms (never), maximum cleanliness of the corridors, and a beautiful kitchen box in which no one can steal your belongings. You will also be entitled to drive the hostel's Ferrari to go to work, well maintained and always ready to go. If you are tired of places that look like discharges, that's the place to be as there is no useless car staying in the middle of the courtyard and alley, plus the garden is just wonderful. Just stop there one day and enjoy an experience that you will never forget! No worries it is very easy to check in as John is a hard-worker and for this reason the reception is open most of the time.

I really like this hostel. It's a bit far from the Greyhound bus stop but i think it's the only inconvenient. It's very close to the main street so you have many shops and cafes all around. Also very close to the supermarket. It's a very clean hostel with a big kitchen and a nice common area. Also the pool is great. Staff is very polite. Room was clean and spacious for everyone and the bathroom is inside.

+We were greeted by a lovely lady and adorable dog at reception who made us feel very welcome. …

-Public bathroom does get pretty hot during the day so not the best for getting ready in..

-The private’s room was like a prison it had a bed and that was it also bathroom was dirty wouldn’t stay again..

I can’t fault Aussie Tavern & Backpackers hostel.

I have been here with my partner for 7 weeks and we couldn’t be more pleased with how Natalie & Amanda have welcomed us into their Aussie Nomads family.

We have never done any sort of travelling like this before and we were very nervous to come to Bowen.

7 weeks later it’s the best decision we have ever made. We have made so many..... too many friends for life ? which we never thought would happen. And we have both landed very good farm jobs for this season.

We had this hostel recommended to us from many previous backpackers who have stayed here and throughly enjoyed their 3 months that they stayed on for a couple more weeks to get some extra money from their farm, and enjoy the red dog experiences a couple more times ?.

Highly recommend this hostel to travellers looking to do there 88 days.

Natalie & Amanda are very accommodating and are always there to give you motherly advice when needed which is a massive help being so far away from home . ?

The most terrible place I've ever been in Australia. Alao the most disgusting experience I've had in this country.Waiting for almost 1months without any jobs.

The woman Richel was so rude that I doubt if she comes from savage society. They just treat backpackers as trash.

The hostel itself is pretty decent but they're not as consistent with offering work as they say. They told me i would get 2 weeks fulltime work but only got 4 days.

    Response from the owner

FARM WORK IS CERTAINLY NOT FOR EVERYONE.LUCKILY WE 99% OF PEOPLE DO THE RIGHT THING AND 100'S OF PEOPLE PER YEAR GAIN THEIR VISA HAPPILY WITH US.

    • Google Review (1/5)

Never go to this hostel. There is a chance you get a nice job, but also a chance you get to work at places where you earn 2 dollar an hour doing black labor.(not usable for second year visa)

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At one day we went to a farm and did the following:

We had to climb in trees and such to shake mango's out of trees that where picked 5 times already. We made 30$ each on 7 hours (40degrees)

So we decided to take everyone in the bus. ( around 8 people)

We told the Owner( Marlene) about the situation, Black Labor, no ensurance, no money, climbing trees( dangarous)

But she got really mad at us for leaving , she diddn't care about our wellbeing. So she decided to not give us a job anymore.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The worst thing was that they force you to take the job, if you dont like it and tell them its not fair work, they will kick you out of the hostel and take your deposit. Or just not give you any job anymore so you will have to leave.

There are a lot of people that will leave the place with less money then they started with.

The only nice thing about the hostel is that you will meet a lot nice backpackers.

    • Google Review (5/5)

5 stars because I had a nice time here. I had nice jobs and I will complete my 88 days here. Mick and Marlene were always nice to me and the best part is that you have a second family here because here are so nice people with so many different nationalities!

Be careful with this hostel and it’s 5-star-recommendations ...

I’ve stayed there for 4 weeks in march. I worked only 2 days a week on a capsicum farm, but there is no chance they let you chance the farm unless you get fired …

    Response from the owner

    Hi Lukas,

I can understand that you're unhappy with your stay at the hostel, but unfortunately you secured employment yourself while foregoing our employment process. This, in turn, took a position from a guest who had more experience and had been waiting longer for that spot. You were, in fact, told beforehand that this move would be in violation of your contract, so you had full knowledge of the consequences that followed. Naturally, this was strictly against the rules in your contract (as it is not fair to other guests), and so you were asked to leave the hostel.

Regarding our "fake reviews" - I'm extremely disappointed that you're challenging the authenticity of reviews written by our guests. We regularly undertake activities with our guests, and often will ask if guests who had positive experiences can write reviews. None of our reviews are fake.

Although we are sorry to see that your stay ended negatively, if you cannot abide by the rules in your employment contract and are going to take a job away from our operations and those guests waiting for a position (along with the other issues we and the community had with you during your time in Ayr), then I cannot sympathise with you.

    Regards,

    Brian

I stayed in this Hostel many years ago when a couple named Sandra and Dennis were in charge. I was looked after very well and given good work on a local farm. The work lasted for 6 weeks and I managed to save enough money to travel all the way back to Sydney and have a great time along the way. I have no idea who is in charge now, or if the place is still as good as it was, but I will always be grateful for my time there.

I spent a month in Delta Backpackers, arrived without a reservation but was still found work within 2 days. I can't recommend this place enough if you're working towards your 462 visa, a good hostel and the owners are some of the best Aussies I've met, helpful and good people. The hostel has all facilities that you could need and a big pool, also a lively social life without being a party hostel. Would recommend, thanks for the experience

    • Google Review (1/5)

I spent a whole year in Australia and this for sure is one of the worst places I’ve been. Felt like I was in an orphanage. plus after I told the owner I was leaving (you need to let them know at least 4 days in advance to get your 200 dollar bond back) she stopped being friendly to me and of course lost my job mysteriously..

unfortunate how people’s behaviour depends on the money you give them.

    • Google Review (1/5)

The room they put me in was like a prison cell. No window. Just a fan and AC. I had to leave the AC on all night and it was freezing cold and it would get hot again without the AC. I couldn't get proper sleep staying there.

Bugs everywhere. It's a miracle that there was no bed bugs. Showers and toilets were jail quality.

I get why they have so many stupid rules. I reckon they had too many crazy stupid backpackers. I've seen better cheap hostels.

At least they seem to have some jobs around. But seriously, you'd go crazy if you work while staying there.

    • Google Review (1/5)

The management is bad. All the past reviews are from the previous owners so don’t come here based on those like I did!

They tell you there is work here and then you have to wait around whilst other people who arrive after sometimes start full time work before you. It is harder to find work as a girl so they bring in couples to keep you paying rent.

They send aggressive messages all the time and charge you extra fees unnecessarily. Don't waste your time, find another hostel with better management. Some people were here for six months doing their 88 days....

She helped me find a job right away and was super understanding and caring about my situation. The place is very organized in helping you get your days done. It is also very clean, and full of energy. The people you meet will make you want to stay. I feel so grateful for my time spent there.

    • Google Review (5/5)

I really loved my time here at the Banana Barracks! Paula and her team are absolute legends and run a great operation. I spent loads of time reading up about different hostels and am really glad that I chose here. I’ve read that other hostels tell you there’s work when there isn’t so you go there, lie about how long the waiting lists are so you end up sitting around for ages, confiscate your passport and then try and rip you off out of your deposit at the end for bogus reasons.

Glad to say that nothing like this happened at all at the Barracks. The first time that I called up they said to hold off coming up for a bit as at the time there wasn’t enough work for the amount of people that were there. Happily when I called the second time there was space and I headed straight up. The hostel has a great communal space where everyone hangs out (much better than Hotel Tully up the road) and is generally full of pretty sound people. A few people got kicked out when I was there for being complete idiots which kept the peace nicely. The security guy Glen also deserves a mention as he’s really fair and keeps the peace really well whilst still letting you party pretty hard. The floors, kitchen & bathrooms are cleaned every day and on Monday the whole place is cleaned which keeps it nice and tidy.

Being honest there’s a couple of things that you’d want changed. The pool doesn’t seem to get cleaned, a few of the mattresses are pretty old, the rooms could do with a paint and the small table top oven sucks and gets so hot it’s hard to use but apart from that the place is great! Tully is the wettest place in Australia so I’d say it’s best not to leave it until you only have 3 months left to do 3 months farm work as there’s a good chance you might have some days work rained off. I’d recommend the Barracks to anyone and actually miss the place now I’ve got back to Melbourne!

It's a nice little hostel to stay at, with basic bed rooms that can get a bit cold in the night. The kitchen is basic but has everything you would expect from a hostel. I stayed here for a couple of nights while I was touring the local spots and would be happy to do so again.

+Lovely little hostel. Staff were really friendly and I liked how they picked you up from the Greyhound bus stop and drop you back after your stay. The pool was lovely and I especially liked the chill out areas next to the kitchen! Would be even better if there was a restaurant/bar on site!.

The hostel is absolutely disgusting, the owner is a conman who will charge you 210 dollars a week even if you are working 1 and a half days a week and earning 270. You pay a deposit of 200 dollars which he keeps if you don't stay for 14 weeks. DO NOT GO HERE the chances are you will get between 1 and 3 days a week work. There are plenty of other hostels In innisfail.

    • Google Review (5/5)

Budget backpackers is what working backpackers need, work right from the start, fair pay and ability to have fun when you want to. Most importantly it is a perfect for people who wants to get their 13 weeks of rural work without any problems!

    • Google Review (1/5)

Horrible conditions where you might get payed for what you work. Do yourself a favor, and find a proper place to stay, only stay if you are truly desperate.the place feels more like a prison/mental asylum than a hostel. The people, and managers are nice though.

    • Google Review (1/5)

If I could avoid given them a star I wouldn’t even get them one. The hostel is SO BAD! It looked like a prison. I do not understand that people actually can live there it was disgusting! The owner of the hostel (Steve) promise you work but that’s a lie. STAY AWAY! You must really want your 2rd year visa if you live there... norhing more to say.

    • Google Review (1/5)

This place is absolutely disgusting! Me and my partner came here promised work yet nobody told us anything about when we start etc. The hostel is filthy!! I would 100% avoid here! I only stayed two nights and cannot describe how happy I am to be out of the place! Prison would defiantly be luxury compared to this!

DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE.

the guy john who runs the whole set up is a straight up con man who loves to play puppet master.

U will have to wait a long time for him to give u work and wen he does it's 1-2 days a week. He charges $200 a week to live. In what can only be described as a crack den. U never make enough money to cover rent and food so u end up paying to do the farm work.

If u need farm work and your in a rush. Better off going to a farm that don't won't pay but gives u accommodation and food.

    Response from the owner

What an embarrassment. Was given a private double room Told it would be a one week wait . Was given job humping because said he would smash it . After first day asked to be moved because it was too hard . Quit second morning had to be picked up while he left the other men to cover for him and was escorted off the farm by the farmer because of his attitude. Just embarrassed on his behalf by his performance and now by his cowardice once he has left . The farm is still working today without him which is a win for everyone involved .

I arrived at the hostel in january and started work the next day. I honestly could not be happier with not just my job but the hostel in general. Such a good vibe and Sam and John will always look after you as long as you are happy to put in the work. You'll meet mates for life... I couldnt have chosen a better hostel sort my second year visa ?

    • Google Review (1/5)

The house is wrecked send in the bulldozer! pests all over the place it’s a mission just to prep food. $200 rent very expensive considering the area & poor accommodation!!! WiFi costs $40 each per month. 80% of people don’t get enough hours, farm days take months & months to get & save little. Mattresses are wafer thin so after grafting on the farm your back gets more punishment through the night. Cooking equipment is trashed. OWED FOR 3 HOURS WORK. Dropped off 1 hour early to farms. ADVISE.. SPEND SOME DOLLAR ON THE PROPERTY, BUSINESS ISN'T ALL ABOUT TAKE TAKE TAKE. On the plus side make good friends.!!

Beautiful hotel, very historic. Lovely food and good location in central town. Accommodation looked good but did not stay so can not rate this aspect

    • Google Review (1/5)

Unclear guidelines when checking in has ultimately resulted in myself and partner losing 180 dollars each for a weeks stay in a shared dorm. Other Australian hostels give refunds when circumstances change. Work and situation promised was not the case, and we left after honouring hours given. Accommodation and facilities are very poor, racist comments made by staff when taking you to and from the farm, nice as pie until you pay them and then very difficult to deal with. If you're looking to do your 88 days, I would advise finding work elsewhere. Allegedly a working hostel is being built in Atherton Valley by a rival company, independent lodges with own kitchens etc. I'm sure they'll harvest a lot of Barron Valley's business.

    • Google Review (1/5)

I'm a travelling atm. This is a dirty hostel with weird rules. For example if you forget a dish to clean u pay a 20 dollar fine. No alcohol anywere allowed except if you drink at the pub of the owner. They also forbid you to go to other pubs. If you do they kick you out. And no refunds of the week-ahead pay. I left after 3 days. Nothing given back :P. So i recommend another hostel. The hostel is above the pub here. Serieusly dont go here. Cya!

We were in the neighbourhood and we stopped to have a look at the hostel. We entered the place and tried to talk to someone.

Then the Korean manager came and said we were trespassing the hostel and we couldn’t enter. He said come stand here outside. We were just shocked and said we just wanted to ask you if there is any jobs available. He said No and you can’t enter the hostel. (The frontdoors were open and it looked like a house that was transformed into a hostel with a reception.)

    We felt very unwelcome!!!!

    He clearly had no manners....

    • Google Review (1/5)

    BIG SCAM!

the korean manager will tell you that you are going to work 6 days a week and make good money. The truth is that you are just working 2 days a week to pay the overpriced rent. Everybody in this "hostel" is just working 2-3 days a week (maximum). He is a very unhonestly person so do not trust him.

    • Google Review (4/5)

Not sure why everyone is saying this is a bad place , the staff are so friendly to everyone and they do there best to get you work , if you work hard then you will have no problems here , I done my 88 days here from January to June , and the people at the lodge are like your family , don’t get me wrong the showers aren’t the best , but the experience with all the people is truly amazing!

I am really shocked and I didnt know that we could meet such dishonest people. run to knock on their doors and you will have only problems, We went with happy travels my boyfriend and I, we had a home of the most deplorable, the accommodations are very dirty, They also benefit the koreens so while they take your place on the farm, you pay yourself as idiots, likewise, they charge you $ 15 a day or you work, that is to say that basically, you pay $ 170 but in addition to the charges. a lot of backpackers are there for their farms, they know it and take advantage of it but the biggest advice I have to give you, to avoid the Korean boss, he sweats dishonesty. On the other side, very strict rules when it comes to alcohol

Dryer wasn't able to dry all the clothes

Kitchen facilities could be better, for example the hotplates sometimes don't get hot enough. I only get 100mb of free wlan a day. The best days of the grand hotel lay behind. Its a bit like run-down.

Great bar down stairs. Good kitchen facilities and relaxation area. Location very central on the main street. Had a bad experience and was put in a dorm room with someone who seemed to be living and working there. They had their stuff everywhere and it felt weird. The room was also small and cramped. Went to go to bed on the first night and she had some guy in her bed. Had to wait to go to sleep. I would not stay there again. Didn't really feel welcome and staff seemed a bit unprofessional.

+Air conditioning was amazing and the comfort of the rooms was worth the value. Plus the parking around the back was really decent for a hostel. …

-Access to the parking. I’m guessing not a lot of people park around the back anyways. Nearly dinged up the hire car trying to get passed the beer kegs..

+Location, tropical setting, spacious kitchen, nice bar..

-No breakfast and bar closed before 10am.

    • Google Review (3/5)

It's a very nice place the pool the atmosphere. But the only thing was disappointed me that when we book the room we didn't get the room that we expected. So we ending up in a two singles bed instead of 1 single and 1 double bed. So my husband ending up sleeping on an air mattress.??

+The Stuff is extra helpful and incredibly kind. I would go back there any minute. …

-On the Booking.com website it said that you will have a private bathroom, which is definitely not the case. No. So be aware!.

+The staff went above and beyond when I had any queries. Could not have been nicer to deal with! Great value for money..
