Kitschy, eclectic space with a great vibe. The dorms were clean, the common spaces ample. Staff is incredibly patient and helpful. Salamanca and Constitution Dock (MONA ferry!) are a 10 minute walk, in addition to lots of eateries ($-$$$$) and groceries. Communal luggage room available with lockers for a fee (didn’t use cuz my dorm mates were awesome and there was plenty of storage space under and around the bunks). Minimalist accommodation but so cozy and welcoming. Will definitely stay here again!

Disappointing.

Downstairs bar and nooks for seating dining. Warm friendly welcome but then went downhill from there.

Security lax with open rear windows. Noise from tv till midnight, common room till later. Cleaner emptied bottle bins 6am! Dorm a mess. Door handle broken. No bed light. No power or usb. No shelf. Sheet felt and smelled unclean. Pillows need replacing. Bathroom upstairs and all the way to rear of building. Maintenance lacking. Door missing from mens toilets...

Would we stay again. No.

  • Hostelworld Review: (10/10)

Super cosy, chill, warm and easy to be comfortable. Really nice atmosphere among everyone staying there - some long termers. Comfy beds and nicely laid out 14 bed dorm, didnt feel crowed at all even though was full. Reception always happy to help and provide info. The tours they offer were involving good attractions, although i didnt go on the tour myself. Around the corner was Eurocar where we rented a car, soo convenient and a two min walk away from the hostel. Great time, I love Tasmania.

  • Tripadvisor Review: (2/5)

I didn't enjoy it

I was in a 14 beds room, overcrowded, not well ventilated, nor good illumination. The stuff isn't the helpfull, everything seems over capacity.

My friend had a bug in her bed, and they didn't give her any compensation for the night she had to spent sleeping in the living room. They only changed her room.

Lots of long term guest, so may be hard to socialize if you're there only for a few days

Fun in Hobart

It’s very funky and fun. Building is a little old and it’s not that close to downtown. Great fun if you like hostels (and I do)

Convenient location; bathrooms were clean; private room was very large with a comfortable bed; quiet

  • Hostelworld Review: (6/10)

I've been very unhappy with how the management treated us. We got fined 30$ for something that was purely an accident and I've never been so ashamed of the behaviour of someone else before. It was absolutely reckless that they fined us and although the hostel was nice and the other guests and the staff extraordinarily friendly, I left with a bad feeling. The management is not open to find compromises.

  • Tripadvisor Review: (3/5)

Good and bad

Need more private bathroom and shower. And they don't look clean. Kitchen is mess no place to put food in the fridge. No much plates and cups. The chair and sofa look dirty need a cover so that they are wash every time.

Beds are good and comfy. Need more storage places in the room.

  • Booking.com Review: (9/10)

Comfy bed. Clean rooms.

Disliked · One toilet in the men's room. Water soaked carpet in the vicinity of the men's bathroom at the time of our stay - must have been a plumbing issue. I hope this was sorted.

I really liked the nook. I stayed for several nights here. It was comfortable. The kitchen was good. The hostel itself was not very full (due to travel restrictions from COV-19) which did make it easier to use the kitchen. I liked the laid back feel here.

Superb Place! Overall the best value for money.

Superb Place to be. Staff is extremely helpful and often go the extra mile to help you. Good amenities and a welcoming lounge where everyone can socialize.

Very Close the city centre (2min) and value for money for the location and services.

Clean rooms and bathrooms. Huge kitchen so we don't have to queue and wait. Separate bbq station and entertainment area. Ping pong, Movie room, pool table. Secure Parking too. They also give free tours to Mt Wellington :)

First Hostel Experience

Located very near the water, Salamanca Place, and in Battery Point, this property offered multiple lodging options and was a clean, well managed alternate to other, more expensive options. No snoring from the five other women bunking in my shared room.

  • Hostelworld Review: (10/10)

Truly beautiful hostel in the historic Hobart suburb of Battery Point, an easy walk from the airport bus. Best hostel kitchen I’ve encountered, including plenty of regularly washed tea towels! I’d definitely stay there again, in a heartbeat.

This hostel is easygoing, quite, clean and well organised.

There is everything you need: lots of space to enjoy, laundry, nespresso machine, free te and coffee and a free car park.

I loved it

  • Hotels.com Review: (6/10)

First stay at a YHA. Very nice and helpful staff. Great location. Our private, ensuite room was separate from shared rooms and facilities and was quiet. However, the property is pretty run down and needs a major upgrade. Common kitchen is small and had many flies. Sheets and towels did not smell or looked clean.

  • Tripadvisor Review: (3/5)

Situated right in the centre of Hobart, it’s in a perfect location for all your activities. Rooms and bathrooms were very clean and I never felt unsafe during my stay. The winning part of this hostel is it’s incredible staff. They were so friendly, caring and understanding. I had to extend my stay a few times due to the COVID situation and they could not have been more accommodating. I felt so comfortable here.

Consider your options

I stayed here for one-night before transferring on to a tour, so can only really judge the ease of check-in and room comfort.

As I arrived late and the reception was closed, I pre-confirmed a mechanism for checking-in. As it happened, without an Australian SIM card, I had to log on to the hostel’s WiFi and call the number left on the door. This wasn’t a simple solution.

I arrived in town after a warm day and tried to sleep in a room without a fan or a/c. This was a challenge, whilst it was also on a creaky, metal bunk.

It’s therefore my conclusion that there must be more comfortable local, budget accommodation options for using whilst in town.

Very good

Super central location! The room was very clean and comfortable. Staff was very friendly.

Luggage storage was unlocked with the door open all day. The storage is also shared with the restaurant, so there was very little room to leave bags.

  • Google Review: (4/5)

This's to provide a hack for future fellow travellers to get around the cold showers. I really like Tassie Backpackers at The Brunswick so criticising it is like criticising a good friend, you don't really want to. I love the character of the old building, it gives you a taste of the old Hobart which is really nice and the lounge and rec areas are cosy, it's reasonably sociable, generally good people and vibe. Ok - so it generally has barely warm showers unless you get in early but the hot water runs out very quickly. I got lucky the first day and got actually consistent hot water which I never have there before, but the second day they were lukewarm at best and given there were two unexpectedly freezing cold mornings in Hobart, this would've been intolerable and I honestly don't know how people there do it. Two get arounds, one of which I'd resolved to do if I ever stayed there again and this happened is the Doone Kennedy Aquatic Centre is 10 minutes walk east of there, easy to get to and for $2 non-swim entry you can have a warm shower, which I did. The second, which I discovered later that day, is that there are free showers on Level 3 of the car park of all things attached to the shopping centre with the Woolworths in it across the road from the Brunswick. If the hot water is next to nonexistent which it mostly is I *strongly* recommend one of these two options unless it's summer and hot as in the colder months the cold showers are just horrible. The only other thing is there are hardly ever any bowls in the kitchen which from what I observed is because guests pilfer them which really isn't cool. But not the fault of Tassie Backpackers, you just have to be prepared is all I'm saying.

Was here very briefly, but for what I needed this place was perfect! Cheap accom in an old building, it’s what you would expect for the price. Location was perfect, accom a little tricky to navigate so could use some better signage for bathroom/toilet and kitchen, but it has character. Relaxed vibe, a bit noisy with the pub, minimal AC and power points for charging in rooms but portable fan and gang plug was provided. A good base for work/holiday trip. Would stay again!

Stayed at the Ibis styles hotel. It was our first visit to Hobart & we were really pleased with the location of the hotel. It was an easy walk to Salamanca markets & all the main Hobart attractions. Lovely staff & it was no problem to organise a late check out as we had an afternoon flight back to Sydney. We had breakfast twice in the dining room which was very enjoyable but unfortunately didn’t have dinner as we had made other plans. Lovely modern hotel our room had views to Mt Wellington. Will definitely return.

This review may not be relavent to the current staff but I stayed in this hostel 12years ago when my son was 4 and I was 22 he love this huge place that he slid around on his socks everywhere. The place was clean and welcoming and most of all warm, in both felling and tempeture. It's hard to backpack with a toderler and this place made it easy. My son met people from all over the world, I remeber him siting quietly talking with a young lady from Germany they were discussing why jimmy Newtron was better than spong bob. I honestly have never to that day, or this had such an easy backpackers exprence with a child. Most places won't allow children let alone make them feel greate about there adventures.

  • Google Review: (1/5)

If I could give 0 stars, I would give them. The facilities in this hostel are totally down and except that we found mold in the curtain in our room. They offered us another room but still with mold in the courtain. We paid for a whole week and even if they had no mold free room for us they were not willing to give us the money back. I have asthma and we told them. We couldn't stay there checking out after one night and lost 340$.

They told us that they clean the courtains oftenly with mold killer. After our reclamation they washed the curtain again and after that it was so much cleaner than before that I can't believe they wash them often. The whole hostel smells very humid.

Also the aura is really bad. This hostel was an home for elderlys before and it looks actually still the same.

Everytime we told some local where we stayed they knew immediately that's a shity place.

  • Hostelcritic.com Review: (3/5)

This is a sprawling place with lots of rooms, and not bad facilities. I was there at a quiet time however, and there was not a single other person staying there. The dorms are quite big, but very bare and dull. No linen comes with the beds, and they are very basic, but the hostel is also very cheap. I paid just $12 a night there. A negative point is that the hostel is way out of central Dewvenport - not too far to walk if its a nice day, but not pleasant in the rain.

  • Hostelcritic.com Review: (3/5)

We stayed here for 2 nights and took advantage of a top tour to Cradle Mountain - $50pp. The owner is nice and the hostel was an old nurses accommodation, it was quite drafty as middle of winter, but the duvet supplied for the double rooms was excellent! There are some longer staying residents there who are strange to say the least, but every night @ 6:30pm there are FREE cakes and bread for all!

Not good for couples. Great for groups of 4-6.

Rooma qere ok, comfortable beds. The cabins are shared between several travellers so even if you book a private room, you will be staying with single travellers as well. Confined space and very noisy. We had 2 terrible single travellers in the cabin whom played loud music and made excessive noise. We went to complain but the reception advised us we would have to deal with the travellera ourselves or upgrade to a private cabin ($50 extra). We decided to just stay and was very happy to leave the next day.

Beautiful place to stay!

  • Google Review: (2/5)

We left as soon as we were able to secure alternative accommodation after discovering a lot of long hair strands under the bottom pillow. Top pillowcase looked like it had been washed but there is no way the sheets and/or bottom pillow case could have been washed with that much hair under and hanging from the pillow. Can't comment on any of the other facilities as we didn't stay, the hair was too off-putting

Good vibes but grotty hostel

Stayed here for a few nights in a mixed dorm. The place had good vibes, friendly staff and plenty of chatty and friendly people. It’s also very cheap as well.

The drawback was that the facilities were very grimy and in disrepair. The kitchen and bathrooms were especially bad. The kitchen had grease dripping down the walls, chunks broken off the walls, a hole in the roof above the stoves and was absolutely filthy. Many of the showers were out of order (had to try 3 different showers before I found one that worked, wasn’t just a dribble and the taps hadn’t fallen off!!) but even the one working shower I found was mouldy, the laminated side wall had peeled off and there was hair everywhere. It’s a cheap hostel so I guess you get what you pay for!

One night stop over

We stopped here during a tour and as it wasn't too busy we had a whole dorm room for me and my girlfriend (which is the dream in hostel life). The fella on the front desk was helpful and knowledgable, the kitchen was well equipped and they even had some adorable dogs wandering around. The room was pretty standard for a hostel, beds were a bit squeaky when turning in the night would be my only complaint.

Perfect place to stay in Launceston to walk Overland Track. Clean, quiet we had a spacious twin room

Liked · This was the perfect place to stay while in Launceston ready to walk the Overland Track. We had a twin room which was very spacious and we loved the cleanliness of the whole place. The kitchen was great to cook our own meals, with a Coles supermarket just up the road. Most of the other backpackers were young internationals, extremely polite and very quiet.

Disliked · Nothing could be better. It was all perfect for our requirements. Not luxury class, but perfect for us.

And for the price ($35) to not have WiFi... It's clearly not normal

Terrible Service

Out of all the hostels I've stayed at across the world, this is one of the worst for cleanliness and facilities, especially considering the price to stay here. However, this isn't the reason why I feel the need to write a review recommending that you do NOT stay here.

The reason you shouldn't stay here is because of the owner: Jayne.

Jayne is rude and aggressive to the backpackers staying at the hostel on a daily basis. It is clear that her motive for running the hostel is solely to take as much money from us as she can. If we ever made any complaints, Jayne's response was:

"If you don't like the way I run things, leave!"

which is exactly what most of us did (after giving 14 days notice to get our $200 deposits back, of course). We naively assumed that - during these 14 days - Jayne would leave us alone and just wait for us to leave, however she continued worse than before, name calling and threatening to kick people out at ridiculous hours of the evening. Worst of all: she actually phoned our employer in an attempt to get us all fired from our jobs.

During my stay at Huon Valley Backpackers I thankfully meant some great people. It's just a shame that the atmosphere was always ruined by Jayne. I'm now staying in a gorgeous Airbnb for a cheaper rate with some of the people I met, would strongly recommend this to anyone completing their 88 days farm work in Huon Valley, Tasmania.

  • Tripadvisor Review: (1/5)

Jayne

If you're reading this from the mainland, and you're considering coming to Tasmania to do farm-work: stay clear of this area. There are limited employers and limited places to stay, and the people in charge will take advantage of that.

Jayne, who runs Huon Valley Backpackers, is no exception. She will take every opportunity possible to take more money from you, on top of the premium price that she is already charging for a less-than-premium service.

I could rant all day, but I don't want to waste more time than I already have arguing with Jayne. I tried to explain to her (in person) that perhaps charging $600+ per month to live in a house with:

- a mouse-infestation

- no working oven

- limited heating

- limited electricity (no plug sockets in the rooms and only a few in total)

- limited hot water (four minute showers)

- no wifi in the hostel itself, and terrible wifi in reception

...was perhaps too much to charge, especially to backpackers who are earning very little as it is. But she told me that this was simply because I didn't understand how to run a business.

I have never run a hostel. But from the way Jayne acts, you would think she hadn't either.

On one occasion, we were woken in the middle of the night by Jayne. She was shouting and screaming at one of the backpackers in the corridor outside the bedrooms. We had to be up at 5:30am the next morning, but that didn't stop Jayne. In the end, she only left when we begged her to go and let us sleep.

I truly believe that Jayne hates backpackers - she said as much to several of us - and THIS is the real problem with Huon Valley Backpackers. Every day she came into the hostel and found something to tell us off for. I could put up with the basic services and facilities, but what I couldn't put up with was Jayne's attitude towards us. About half of the people staying at HVB moved out before the end of the season, and the reason for this (for every single one of us) was to get away from Jayne.

The ONE positive that came from staying with Jayne is the other backpackers we met. So, if it's too late, and you're already here, then here's what I recommend: stay at Jayne's for a week or so, then get a group together and find an Airbnb to move to. That's what we did eventually. And we're certainly getting a lot more for a lot less money than we were at Jayne's.

Although I appreciate HVB is a basic country accommodation this fact is not an excuse for filth and the fact that it is so basic ought to be taken into account when calculating the ridiculous price of the rent. There are three different “hostels” and depending on which you’re staying in you can pay up to $210 a week for the “top” accommodation in ‘Flashpackers’ or the lower end at $180 a week in ‘Cygnet’. There isn’t much difference between the two other than heating and plug sockets. In both you are required to keep your showers to three minutes. In Cygnet there are approx 16 people sharing 2 showers and one kitchen. Both showers of which are poor quality and located in outbuildings just off the main shed/bunk area. The rooms are very small and cramped. The hostel is actually located around 20/30 minutes away from the nearest town and farms. We waited a week before being contacted by the farm for work and the whole experience was very unprofessional and disorganised.

If you’re willing to pay an extortionate amount of money for very basic and dirty accommodation (there is no cleaner for Cygnet and the “cleaner” in Flashpackers is another hostel guest) then Huon Valley is perfect.

Also good luck getting your deposit back, only when legal action was discussed did Jayne “consider” giving ours back. Luckily we did get it back after much email discourse.

I am not one for giving a bad review but I felt this hostel really ought to be exposed for exploiting young backpackers. Being charged $210 a week for horrible accommodation, plus potentially paying for transport each day and then not being given a fair wage from the farm is simply wrong. Piece rate 8/10 isn’t enough for even the most capable of workers. They claim that you’re meant to pick a minimum of 5 bins a day per person but most fit and healthy young pickers average 3 a day. 3 x 48 = 144. In an 8 hour day that’s $18 an hour. Casual work minimum wage is just under $25 an hour. Fair enough if you’re a super picker but if you’re not you’re going to struggle. A lad we met who is still working at the farm is currently only earning $90 per day.

A lot of the backpackers just ended up smoking copious amounts of weed to forget their horrid day!

I would avoid Huon Valley all together and just head north. There seemed to be far more opportunities in the North I.e. Devonport and Launceston. There are quite a few places who will pay you an hourly wage and working hostels that are affordable with much better facilities. (Some of them will let you clean for two hours in the evenings and you can get your rent for free!) It really is worth looking elsewhere, don’t let yourself get exploited.

Awaiting the inevitable unprofessional response from the owner but nothing can excuse the den of iniquity that is Huon Valley Backpackers.

Lovely place in a beautiful setting, peaceful. Surrounded by orchards. Jayne and Andy are very friendly, kind and hospitable people. Would definitely recommend.

Solid hostel at the seaside

Close to the beach, which is pro! Clean hostel with absolutely modern and clean bathrooms. Cooking facilities could be better (no one has sharp knives these days).

Stayed in a two bed room which was pretty warm during the day, but at night, a cool breeze from the seaside brings cooler air.

Bicheno is somehow close to most sights along the east coast. We also visited Maria island which is about an hour away (plus ferry ride).

Great Location for Freycinet National Park

Great location. Our room was small but comfy enough. Hard to plug things in, the beds were against the sockets and when you pulled the one bed away from the wall to use the plug you couldn't open the door. Glad we were in the back building, we only had to share our bath with one other room. Plenty of parking. Safe area. Clean. But absolutely no frills. We all used the kitchen. Would have been nice to have had a few things like oil, salt, pepper, and the like. We've had that at other backpackers and it's truly a nice touch since travelers can't carry around these things. And they are getting good money for providing basically a bed. They also need to buy a couple of new cutting boards, sharp knives, pots (the teflan was so badly scratched, unhealthy) and a few other things for the kitchen. But overall no complaints, just tips for improvement.

Looks like I dodged a bullet after all

I wanted to stay here, really. But Tasmania locked down its borders and I couldn't visit (from the closest mainland state, Victoria). They refused to issue a refund or even offer travel credit.

You can be sure I will not be staying here once your border reopens. There are many other accommodation providers more deserving of my tourist dollars.

Spirit of Tasmania and the other accommodations we booked with were a class act. Never mind what their booking or cancellations policy stated, refunds were issued. I will remember and try to support them once we are allowed to travel again!
