AVOID AVOID AVOID.. ok, we were not expecting great things for the price we paid, and we're not picky travellers when it comes to accommodation, but this place is by far the worst hostel we've ever stayed in, and we've been travelling around the world for 2 years now! We were given a room right behind the "common area" where people can socialize. SOCIALIZE, an unknown word for the trashy, rude, drunk and disgusting backpackers staying in this place. They kept us up until 4 am and they only stopped because I have to call the police. ME. Because these kids wouldn't listen to the managers. Good job with authority guys. They obviously hear normal people complain every day, they just don't care because we're there just for the night. The backpackers are there for the whole season. To wrap it up, we can't say much about the staff, they were nice and polite but did not do a thing to help us. Thanks to Matt, that heard us the next morning and got us our money back

    • Google Review (3/5)

Was planning on staying here long term for farm work, couldn’t even hack a week. 3 stars given are for the staff and the cleaners who are lovely.

I have never witnessed less considerate guests in my life, and I have stayed in a lot of hostels. My boyfriend and I had a PRIVATE room and were still kept up until at least 2am every night by people shouting and screaming outside the room. Falling into our window, sitting on our chairs. And I don’t just mean loud talking I mean genuinely screaming. I felt like I was at a university freshers night. I hadn’t found work yet but felt the upmost sympathy for those getting up for work at 5am each day. I had to get out of bed one night at 4am and ask some people to please chat somewhere else rather than at our window! I love a party but I’m never rude to other guests of wherever I am staying.

On top of all this it advertises ‘free wifi’ which it is, but it’s only 750mb that you get at a time, and when it’s run out you have to walk to and from the reception asking for another 750mb. You need a different code for each device you have and once staff member refused to give me more than one (when I have a phone and a laptop).

Good location, good food ya the restaurant but hostel is Overpriced for what it is. Wouldn’t stay here longer than a night or so.

I stayed there from Oct.2014 till Jan.2015 and I can without any hesitation, describe it as the best three months of my life. Best atmosphere ever, only fun people, the best weekly barbecue and the nicest hostel manager ever.

I know at least 3 people who lost their virginity during the 3 months and one of them even on the beach right next to the hostel. If you're doing the classic Melbourne to Cairns east coast route, i highly recommend you to stay for a longer time period in the Hoey Moey. You'll have a clean room, good people, a beautiful beach right next to it and nice staff around you.

Thanks Frank and Vanessa and the whole Hoey Backpacker Crew from that time. You really made it the best time I've ever had !!

+It was very clean. The staff was amazing! Very helpful and friendly. There are many things provided to do on a rainy day. In total a very Great Place to stay.

-The beds were quite uncomfortable and only a few stoves worked in the kitchen. Maybe these should be replaced. Other than that it’s a very nice hostel!

+Overall probably one the best, maybe even the best hostel I stayed in during my travels.

    • Booking.com Review (7.5/10)

-Heard whispers about possible Bed Bugs in the area. This was a turn off. Also the fans were very dirty and needed a clean.

+Close to the beach, shelves for your stuff and tidy, organised rooms. Big, clean kitchen and big showers..

The front desk is always ready to help you or give you some important information. There are several activities that you have to join you want to see Coffs Harbour as a local. The kitchen smells always of some different goodthings cause all people can enjoy the cook time (you can find all the stuff you need). The room is big enough to have your space and the staff are really cool

    • Google Review (5/5)

This place is extremely clean . Really nicely done kitchen, rooms are very clean too. The people there were amazing.

Most of them are working, so it's not much of a party life (Which was good for me)

Bathrooms are really clean as well.

    The beach is extremely close.

More of a Surfing vibe, which is also great. They give out surf boards and body boards. Service is really good too.

Nice hostel. Not too expensive... unfortunately there were cockroaches in the kitchen when we were there. But apart from that they really try to run a nice hostel. Big TV in the living room with Netflix. A pool to cool down, different activities every day and you can rent surf boards. Enjoyed our stay there!

it was this or my car, and i would have preferred my car in hindsight. only plus was comfy beds and nice bathroom. my PRIVATE room was overpriced with a stinging fan, leaking PIPE, BROKEN LOCK and little cracks and stains on the floor/carpet. the staff were rude and seemed to want to get rid of their patrons and just get on with their day. didn’t notify me about anything - had to find out about the parking and wifi through other people. limited parking. whole place smells like cigarettes. wish i spent my money elsewhere. $69 ill never get back.

Good value for money and handy to stay there- secure and quiet too

    • Google Review (1/5)

This hostel is absolutely disgusting. So run down, so unclean and the kitchen is smelly and unhygienic. The fridge clearly hasn’t been emptied in months. Broken furniture, rooms need a massive amount of TLC. Sheets smelt damp and I woke up with a rash on my face. Only plus is there’s a good few pubs and clubs around and beaches are not too far away - by car. DO NOT STAY HERE! You will regret it!

Friendly staff. Owner is a gem. If you call in advance they will help backpackers get an hourly job and help with transport. Hostel isn't the cleanest or the newest but it's homely. If you're here for a while other backpackers are welcoming and friendly. Nice location short walk to town. My bunk bed was old but comfy.

I was sceptical of this place at first. Ive been to a working hostel before and have felt like a slave. This is one of those complete opposite of those times.

I liked the Mildura Backpackers Hostel Conviently located to facilities and tourist attractions. Other fellow backpackers quite friendly.Heaters in all rooms and common lounge areas made it nice and warm. The Proprietor John picked me up from Mildura Station at my arrival time off the coach at 11: 30 pm .Awesome!!

By the comments I can say Toni (Mohammed) hasn't changed a bit. I did stay here about 2 years ago. In one of his other houses where he stores backpackers. 80 90% didn't get a job from his as promised. And the ones that did get a job was mostly cash in hand, didn't count towards rural work (88 days),etc ...

And even in these conditions he thought it was reasonable to raise the rent from $150 (which is ridiculous already) to $160, .

Answer to your comment below: I already had a job, just needed a place to stay which as written above wasn't worth its price. And just Sharing the experience of my back then housemates.

    Response from the owner

u must be one of the 5% that are not happy

always agood reason if u didnt get a job

Amazing place... Friendly, kind staff and a lot of fun... jobs as well👍

    • Google Review (1/5)

Tony does not play by the rules and he can’t blame Larry ... Tony has overcrowded rooms for greed and unclean kitchen, rats come around in the front room & cockroaches in the kitchen! He has no care for you stuff or safety and had breached the law of privacy one of many .. he feels like he can let him self in to all the rooms who knows if he has taken out anything. He does ask 24hour prior to entering I bought this up with him and he then tried to threatened me to say I was going the next day. At one point there was 20 people in one house and Tony was carrying out building with out permission at the same time, an inspection was carried out and they found out to many people were in the house so he pulled 10 bed out the house !!!! People how travelled to Melbourne for the weekend ended up with no were to go ! I’m Warning you not to go... the cars he offers to got to work with are unsafe and Tony carries out he’s own repairs.... he has refused to pay my deposit back .. This is the first step Tony just pay me the deposit

    Response from the owner

u know that is not true and u were kicked out for sneaking ur un paying friend in

    • Google Review (5/5)

I stayed with Tony and i had a great time. If you’re good to him he’ll be good to you. He helped me out in lots of ways and I actually learnt some things. If you’re willing and committed he will get you some good work.

A place you can call home!

Did my farm days in three months, and everyday was like staying in family! Big kitchen where you can cook and than have meal with friends all together! Pool to refresh you after work, close to supermarkets! Rooms are all different, I was in a 4 bed one and had the best time with my roomies! Eva and Vince are always there to help you finding cash in hand jobs and good paid farm jobs

Highly recommended, will come back next year as well!

Backpackers there are amazing however bed bugs issue it still there. I'm was previously in shared 3 alone, although it was sort of good for privacy as the cabins are full, you won't be totally alone at night, if you get what i mean..so don't forget to check your beds everyday.

P.S, hostel isn't always the cheapest, walk and ask around, it's a small town. Good luck

    • Google Review (5/5)

Really lovely place! I stayed 5 weeks and met super cool people and had a lot of fun. The management is really nice to you and always try to find you work. Go get a cabin, the privacy and own bathroom is totally worth it. Besides Hillston is a small town with two pubs, so you can save money. Though with the right group of people you can still have epic partys! Can definitely recommend this place and hope to come back in June 2019!

    • Google Review (5/5)

Really good working hostel with a great manager. Try to get a cabine asap, the shareds are not really good for staying longer. You must also have a car cause trevor, the manager does not offer a lift or a hostel car. Had a good time there while working on an almond farm! Thanks Trevor!

Well I lived there for 8 months, best time of my life. Towards the end of my stay i looked after the backpackers and sent the most keen to the best jobs, Michael is a life long friend(the owner) also his wife (Debbie, an American former backpacker) and brother Pepe.Best experience of my life here and i'm gone 10yrs, if your willing to put in a days work this place is as much fun as you can have, if you lazy as i presume the poster above is go home. Love this place will be back ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you're planning on doing fruitpicking. Stay away, take any other location that isn't fruitshack. Let's start with the conditions: You're given a small, unhygienic, unclean rooms, with unclean and urine smelling beds. You'll want to use your pillows to cover the spots as you'll be given no cover or one that doesn't fit over the bed. Oh and don't let me forget you have to pay for air-conditioning.

And now the discounted accomodation, seems great but no. It's a lie. You only get a discount when you fruitpick oranges that's what you signed up for no? Well no discount for you, Micheal makes you do other jobs, so you'll have to spend time focusing on working off tonights stay rather than getting pay.

The worst thing, is no regard for happiness or current state. The only thing that seems to matter at the end of the day is the owner. Keep Micheal happy is littered across the site, seemingly the only thing that matters. Not you. You're simply seen as a machine.

A great YHA and good for single travellers. Good location, modern but tired, large kitchen, lounge area, open fire, wifi, and great local information desk. Well maintained. Close to shops. The small hotels in the area offer better value if more than 1 person

Friendly staff! And a very chill atmosphere. But my favourite part about this place was how spacious and clean the bathrooms and shareds were. The showers had a lot of room in them and a decent bench to put your stuff. The shareds were excellent!! Lots of room for luggage and to pack and unpack your stuff. Definitely recommend!

Our favourite place to stay in Australia! From the incredible staff to the beautiful and cozy atmosphere. No14 Lovel St is the perfect place to rest after a day of hiking or to just sit back and relax while enjoying the beauty of the Blue Mountains! We will be returning!!!

    • Hostelworld Review (10/10)

One of my favourite stays in Australia. Stayed in a private room. Wonderful fresh sheets, great facilities and a hear warming atmosphere.

    • Hostelworld Review (10/10)

One of the best hostels I ever stayed in, as for the facilities, there was everything I would expect to need after a day of hiking. Kim, the manager, was extremely helpful and suggested tracks I could do given the amount of time I had and explained all details I needed to know. I appreciate many small details I could find in the hostel that show you the passion of the managers for the area they live in. Overall, it really felt like being at travelers' home compared to popular hostel chains..

    • Hostelworld Review (9.7/10)

I loved my stay here! It was such a nice break from Sydney. If you reserve your own room it feels like a quaint cabin. I had a VERY hard time leaving my room. I just wanted to snuggle and read a book. I enjoyed the free coffee and cereal, although I wish they had more free breakfast items. The hostel is close to town/train station but a 45? minute walk to Echo Point/Three Sisters. It was rainy most of our stay but we still enjoyed it. I would stay again.

We stayed here a couple of nights and they put on a reptile encounter show thing which was really cool, we got to hold some incredible critters and the staff were just so lovely and friendly. We also got to go sandboarding at the local area which was epic and we had a great pizza night here where we all just chilled and drank a few beers and ate pizza. This is a fantastic place in the more natural areas. I highly recommend staying here. When I find my pictures I will add them. Great place.

Great place for it's value - fixed price too even when it was the weekend. About 4-5 minute walk to One Mile beach. So many things I loved about this place, great design, you felt more in the natural environment, the large communal share kitchen/lounge space, facilities were kept clean, Thursday evening reptile talks, and the space is shared with other native animals. I went solo camping, but spent the evenings meeting other people in the shared common space which was nice. They also provide free bikes to ride up to the local shops at Anna Bay. The owners were really sweet, easy going and responsive. If I'm ever passing the area again, I would definitely stop by here.

Great hostel. Showers are the best, kitchen is good, swimming pool and pool table are free. Social and fun. Owner/ employees are friendly and helpful. These guys know how to run a hostel and have just got this so right. 5 stars, can't wait to come back on my way back down the east coast!

    • Google Review (5/5)

A cosy yet spacious place with plenty of nooks and relaxation areas. The management are great, ensuring all areas are kept clean by hostel-goers and through regular cleaning by staff. Management also keep well on top of everything in general, with a friendly yet firm approach. I was looked after so well, with a real personal touch, and I deeply appreciate that, it made me feel like I was at home :)

The bathrooms are amazing: newly renovated and great hot showers, very clean, and plenty of hooks in the shower cubicles.

There is all day parking (which you can't get in the Newcastle city hostel), and the location is still close to shops / beaches / bars / plenty of other attractions.

You can tell a lot of love and care goes in to this place. I would highly recommend staying here.

+The location was excellent. A bit noisy in the dorms and others in dorm not locking door properly putting us at risk! …

-The toilet was smelling as not cleaned frequently enough. Danger for gastro.... need to have Glen 20 for hygiene provided. Toilet paper seem to be strewn about! The rug on beds need to be cleaned as not safe after others have slept in the bed..

As a solo traveler I must recommend this place.

Walking distance to the beaches, clean and tidy hostel, friendly staff (management and volunteers), free parking from 5 pm to 9 am (after you need to move your car a few blocks from the hostel to avoid parking tickets, the only thing I didn’t like from Newcastle, the PARKING).

If you’re a solo traveler I recommend you this hostel, they host games, fun events and dinners where you can easily introduce yourself to fellow backpackers and friendly long term locals (not weirdos as other hostels in Sydney and Melbourne) they can give you the best tips to explore Oz

Newcastle is the most underrated city in Australia, amazing landscapes, sports and fitness friendly, nightlife, if you love the sea, definitely is a must visit.
